A Quick Redesign
May 23, 2007

After yet another long posting hiatus, I decided it was a good time to redesign this blog. It’ll give me a little push to keep writing, and to write more consistently.

The redesign this time around is all about simplicity and a keen focus on content. There’s no fussing about with complicated borders and lines. The white space and word spacings do well enough to structure the content for ease of reading. The general idea is to put as little as possible between my writing and the viewer. And yes, if you can’t tell yet, I’ve been on a minimalistic kick lately. Let me know what you think about the new design.

Another change to note is that I switched over to WordPress. I’ve found that WordPress is simply superior to MovableType in its flexibility and design. And also, it’ll make Matt happy that I finally switched over.

Finally, I’ve taken out all the automatic daily del.icio.us postings. I’d like to keep this blog focused on my writing and photos. The links were distracting this focus. If you want to continue following my del.icio.us links, head over to my del.icio.us page.

So, expect more postings to come in the near future. Now, time to rest up after struggling with WordPress template designing.

Time Management
Oct 20, 2005

Yes, I know, I’ve been spending too much time on my photoblog rather than the regulary scheduled material here. There’s been some stuff in the backlog that I need to post, but haven’t gotten to yet. It will come soon.

In other news, I’m really trying to figure out the direction for this blog. It seems to have drifted towards a food and restaurant blog, and, if this is the case, should the whole site be restructured to support such a unified foodie feel? I’ve struggled with this question. I do still want to have personal dialogue and other types of subjects besides food. Any suggestions?

Outsightful

It’s been a long time coming, but I’ve finally revamped my photoblog. It’s now at www.outsightful.com. Most of the older photos aren’t up yet. I’ve switched from pixelpost to movabletype, and no, there is no easy way to export between them.

Oh yes, and I finally upgrade to the new Canon Digital Rebel XT. Happy days are here again.

Domain Name Change
Sep 7, 2005

Sometime this week I’m going to be changing over to my new domain at http://www.jamesyu.org. The current domain at http://www.jamesjyu.info/ will continue to work (it will forward you to the new domain). So be sure to update bookmarks.

For all of you reading with RSS, there’s no need to do anything. I’m changing the domain at the Feedburner level, so the swap will be automatic for you.

My photoblog has also switched to the new site. It is now at photo.jamesyu.org.

This switch is a much needed upgrade from my current host at Telnap to the bigger bandwidth Dreamhost. Expect faster load and response times.

Please, if you see anything that’s amiss while the switch occurs, comment on this post. Thanks.

RSS Feeds
Aug 10, 2005

My RSS 2.0 Feed should now contain the full text of each entry. Also, the link items will now correctly direct you to the site in your newsreader.

Busy Busy

Life is a bit hectic nowadays. I started my career at Dolby this past Monday. More to come soon (when everything settles down).

MIA
Jun 5, 2005

Yes, I know I’ve been MIA for about a week now. The combination of finals, projects, moving, and other business is bogging me down. I should be back to full steam this coming week.

One Year’s Worth of Bantering
May 12, 2005

It’s the one year anniversary of A California Beginning! On May 14th, 2004, I typed my first post:

This will be about the fourth blog Tippy and I have started. Let’s hope this one goes on. I am moving to California to join her soon, and we shall start our new lives together. Hoping for the best!

I guess this means my blog finally “made it.” Here’s to a fruitful next year.

Trackback Spam
Apr 16, 2005

I’m currently being flooded with lots of trackback spam. For now, all trackbacks are closed until I figure out a good method to stop the spam.

Photoblogging
Apr 15, 2005

I’ve decided to start my photoblog, A Daily View (http://photo.jamesjyu.info/). I intend it to be more of an exercise/study for myself. I’ll post a photo a day (thus explaining the Daily part of the title) that I think turned out well, which in my case can be quite mediocre.

I’ve really gotten into digital photography lately, influenced by avant garde photobloggers like Eliot Shepard. I’m currently working with my dinky little snapshot (a PowerShot S110, Digital Elph), but hope to upgrade to an SLR like a Canon Digital Rebel XT, which I’ve been eyeing.

I also plan not to put any descriptions on my photos–I really do believe in having the pictures speak for itself. Or, as Ansel Adams says

A true photograph need not be explained, nor can it be contained in words.

But, if indeed a particular photograph is worth spilling over to print, then I’ll indulge myself.

In any case, comments, whether they be technical or aesthetical, are very welcome–just hit the comment button on my photoblog. Also, you’ll find a link to my photoblog on the upper right hand corner (yes, I’ve finally added a menu!) I’m still working on the “about” section, so don’t hold your breath.
