Filipino Thriller Jul 20, 2007

This has to be one of the weirdest renditions of Thriller I’ve seen. It’s done by the inmates of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center, Cebu, Philippines. Apparently, they put their free time to good use with a pretty impressive show.

The Filipinos really like their Michael Jackson with undead accompaniment. In the summer of ‘97, I went to the movie theater inside the Harrison Plaza shopping mall in Manila expecting to watch The Fifth Element. Before the feature presentation, they showed Michael Jackson’s Ghosts. That experience was as weird as they come, but not as weird as this performance.

That’s fascinating. It’s certainly obvious here that they love their MJ.

Filipinos just naturally like to sing and dance. This sort of thing is really a part of the inmates’ exercise regimen. Here’s an article that talks about the idea behind this sort of thing:

It certainly is a different point of view and is quite progressive. In the Philippines, there is also a jail that doesn’t have any jail cells and inmates can live with their families. It is in my opinion, the pinnacle of criminal rehab.
