List of iPhone Application Lists
Jun 29, 2007

By now, I’m sure all of you are sick of hearing about the report from the iPhone lines, the reviews, and all the other general hype about the second coming of the cell phone. Virtually every technology blog is covering the iPhone in one capacity or another on this glorious date of its release.

But, besides Apple, there are a bunch of people trying to make money by developing iPhone applications. Ever since the announcement that iPhone applications will simply be web widgets running in Safari, developers have been scrambling to get iPhone applications up on the web. And of course, you have to have some place to list all of them. Say hello to the iPhone directories. The following is a list of the ones I was able to find:

The Angle is Important
Jun 29, 2007

In photography, the angle and composition of the shot is important — one could say that it’s more important than the camera, lens, or even the lighting. Getting in the right position often takes significantly more effort, but, it’s what you need to do if you really want the best shot.

On the flip side, the composition of the photograph can be used to alter the perception of the picture in interesting ways. The following are some amusing examples of this (hosted by Scribd):

Robots are becoming more and more realistic to the point of becoming creepy. But, we all know the more important question is, can they break it down? Judge for yourself.

1. Keepon Dancing to Spoon

The Keepon is an amazingly cute dancing robot that yellow and snowman shaped. It’s able to dance to the beat, and actually change and transform its dance in a fluid manner. In addition, it also has the capability to recognize human eye contact and react to it. This is one of my favorite videos.

The Mystical Hang Drum
Jun 27, 2007
hang_pic.jpg

The hang drum is a steel drum-like instrument that employs air resonance for tonal sounds. The instrument is played with the fingers, and the sound is described by many as mystical, and very relaxing. Personally, I think it’s got a very modern electronica sound that can be incorporated into a lot of ambient music.

The only problem is that the only people that make hang drums are two guys in Switzerland. And, of course, they aren’t able to keep up with worldwide demand. The last time I looked, hang drums were going for $2000 on eBay.

In the meantime, enjoy the hang drum videos below:

And, this guy hooked up contact mikes to the hang drum and added delays to each line. The results are nothing short of amazing. If this were my first time hearing it without the video, I would have guessed the piece was painstakingly sequenced using digital software.

Box Seats at SBC Park
Jun 25, 2007

Waiting

This past weekend I had the privilege of watching the Giants and Yankees play from the box seats at SBC Park. Courtesy of GigaOM, Joanne and I got to live up the high roller life at the ballpark. We joked that since this was my first time at SBC Park, I’ll claim that I’ll only go if it’s box seats. Of course, we both brought our cameras to document the experience.

In short, it’s definitely nice if you’re in the box. An assortment of food and beers are served to you throughout the game. The view is fantastic, and the usual crowded stadium seemed far away. Inside the box, you’ll find couches, an HDTV, and a computer to surf on. Heck, you could just hang out in the box during the game and have a great time. Our special wristbands also allowed us to go to the third floor concessions, which are the fancy exclusive indoor vendors.

During the middle of all this, I realized that baseball really isn’t baseball if you’re not down among the crowds where you can buy peanuts and hotdogs from the walking vendors, listen to the children laugh, shoulder your way through the crowds, and hope to catch a fly ball. That’s when we decided to take a stroll around the ballpark and enjoy the crowds.

But, after having enough of that, we retired to our comfortable box to lazily enjoy the game.

University of St. Arvin is Kraft’s Viral Site
Jun 25, 2007

I noticed a few videos on Digg today were from the University of St. Arvin, a viral site made by Kraft. They have a few random videos of people microwaving objects like Christmas lights, which they hope to become viral. Of course, sprinkled in are videos exalting Kraft’s line of easy microwaveble foods.

I still like Microsoft’s Clearification site better, which promotes Vista. Demetri Martin makes everything better.

The Funny People at Waverly Films
Jun 24, 2007

I just discovered the funny people at Waverly Films. They make short one to two minute clips that are funny by being unexpected and weird–just my sense of humor. Here are a few of their clips.
