I’m Coming Out of the Closet…
Jul 11, 2004

the vegetarian closet, that is. Tippy and I have been eating as a Ovo-Lacto-Vegetarians for about 3 weeks now. We’ve had a few seafood products once or twice, which technically makes us a Pesca-Vegetarian, but we try to avoid that. We mostly get our protein from beans, eggs, dairy, and tofu.

I wanted to make a few things clear. From where I come from, most people who say they are vegetarians usually turn their nose up towards meat eaters. Usually it’s a “I’m living life better than you” attitude. However, I want to make my position very clear: I love meat. I love the texture, the way it gnashes between my teeth, and the bits of blood that flow out of each bite. I am becoming a vegetarian just to see how my body would react to such a change in diet. I respect all forms of diet (by diet, I don’t mean programs that focus only on losing weight, but rather, an eating lifestyle). I’m not saying that I’m any better than meat eaters. Nor am I saying all people should be vegetarians. I’m just having some fun.

Tippy initiated it (of course), but now I’m in for the ride. Previously, she was a big meat craver as well, but we both worked through it, and now, it’s suprisingly easy to eat meatless. Although, sometimes when I pass a sizzling piece of barbeque meat, I wonder if I should take a chomp. But then Tippy tugs on my shirt, and points to the falafel instead. Most of the time I just shake my head and think meaty thoughts, but that’s occuring less frequently.

All in all, I like this new diet. Coupled with my new jogging routine, I feel better than ever.

Delicious
Jul 6, 2004

I love “wash me” messages on dirty cars. It’s so deliciously ironic. The vehicle would not be able to invoke such a message if it weren’t dirty, and, it wouldn’t have needed to. But the dirt makes such a message possible.. divine plan? No, but maybe lazy owners…

The Killer Coke Cans
Jul 5, 2004

It seems that the military is on the lookout for coke cans ever since the advent of Coke’s new competition to find the Coke can with the GPS transmitter. It seems they are worried that Coke (or some other entity) may eavesdrop. I think that they really need to get used to the idea of embedded transmitters. Who knows how many things in the near future will have RF capabilities that we’ve only dreamed about a few years ago.

I’m starting to get worried about my qualifying examinations for Stanford’s PhD program. It seems like less than half pass the first time. Trust me, I want to pass the first time.. I’ve heard it’s torture to study for them. I’m going to have to find some hardcore study group during the quarter to get myself ready.

Sometimes I wonder if a life of technical work is what I want. I sometimes look longingly at the design side of the world, and dare to think that maybe I could be a part of it. I have had some experience in graphic and web design, but I feel like it’s all the tip of the iceberg, and I will really need to shift gears in order to pursue it (all or nothing!) I guess we’ll see how this quarter pans out at Stanford…

Apartment’s Done
Jul 4, 2004

Finally, the day has come when the sea of boxes has been drained from the apartment. We’re happy to say, we are satisfied with the results of our hard work. Now, all that’s left are small administrative tasks.

My job has been going well. I find that working at a startup is much more work intensive than at a big company like Intel. It seems like everyone has a task queue for me to do. However, I really like being busy all day, it really makes it go by much faster. I probably look once at the clock at 9:00am, and the next thing I know, it’ll be noon, and off to lunch I go with Tippy. I’ve done a lot of work in Perl in the last week, which is quite refreshing. I’ve always wanted to do some real-world programming, and this is the place to do it.

Tippy and I cooked some enchiladas tonight: really improvised a lot. They were great though.. the cumin really hit the spot.
