Pessimism
Jul 30, 2004

Why is that most people on the net seem very down about the world? Ultra-pessimism and hyperironic come to mind. All the comments I receive on other sites point to three alternatives:

  • People are mostly pessimistic.
  • The optimistic and cheery don’t discuss on online forums.
  • I’m not surfing in the right places.

I think that the latter is most likely true. But really, at sites like slashdot and kuro5hin, people are really about tearing other people down for hyperironical reasons. It’s like we all live in a Simpsoniac online universe.

Work is going well, I’m definitely doing a lot more Perl than I expected. It’s such a wonderful language to code in. Some languages are torture to code in, like VB and Java. Perl is built for the hacker.

I’ve been doing numerous test recordings to test some of the algorithms used at my company. Really, it’s been a big administrative task just to get everything organized for the recordings (file naming, etc.) But I do get to work with some neat audio devices, and develop useful software. This is the first time I’ve ever coded for anyone besides myself (or an assignment). It’s really very satisfying.

Also check out an intern who got to go to Bill Gate’s house for dinner. Very nicely written.

BMX biking
Jul 25, 2004

Okay, I’m hooked. Phase one of a new interest is set. I’ve been watching some vids, and already, I see so many parallels to the world of breaking. The riders go around on a floor (deemed “flatland”), and basically do balancing type tricks and spins with their bikes. It’s literally like breakdancing, except the bike is spinning around. It’s really quite amazing

I can see that many of its roots can be traced to unicycles. They like to balance on one wheel first to get a trick started, then start to do more complicated spins with the added dimension of freedom (ala the unicycle!) Geez, I think it’s time for me to learn more about the fundamentals, and, of course, the ternimology. That’s phase two.

I’m not even sure if the next phase (getting a bmx bike) would occur.. but who knows.

And some awesome BMX biking with Gabe Weed. I think I’m definitely going to look into that.. it’s a bit like breaking on a bike..

Blogging
Jul 22, 2004

I blog.. therefore I am? It’s all about infrastructure.. without the proper tools, no one would be blogging, except for the technologically elite (aka web nerds that know how to automate).

So I can’t believe they actually caught Bobby Fischer in Japan. I guess he was too careless.. I would think he’d be one of those people that you could never stop “searching for.” Anyways, they’re deporting him back to the US.. wonder what they’ll do with him.

I need a bike. Actually, Tippy needs a bike, and I need to fix the flat on my bike. Time to look on craigslist…

Vitamins
Jul 14, 2004

Everywhere you look, you’ll read something about how so-and-so fruit/vegetable has some extraordinary vitamin that is so essential to us. You should eat fruit X!! I sick and tired of reading that about every single fruit and vegetable. Sure they have some vitamins.. every fruit and vegetable has at least trace amounts of good stuff for you. Period. There is no need to go on an avacado craze for the sake of some vitamin that you’re already probably getting all of your daily suggested dose.

We rolled our own avacado and bbq eels sushi tonight. It was great. We probably ate the equivalent of over $40 worth of sushi, at a price of under $4. I think this will be a weekly tradition from now on. We also need a bit more practice at rolling…
